Yesterday, Lizzie brought a couple of papers home from school. They were pictures she had drawn, and underneath each picture was a caption saying something like "I like to ______." Being a kindergartner, it is not always clear what her pictures are. Under one picture, she had written the word "Drol" in the blank space, and we had no idea what the picture was. It had a person and a bunch of boxes and circles and we couldn't tell what they were supposed to represent. We asked her to read the caption to us, and she very clearly read, "I like to drol."
Obviously, that was no help at all.
Confused, we asked her what "drol" meant, and she said, "You know, drol." We asked again what that meant and she said, "You know, drol, like with paper and crayons..."
We realized that after six years our daughter still had never learned the correct pronunciation of "draw."

ReplyDeleteWe have similar homework, her teacher calls it sound spelling, there are so many tricks for them to learn it is crazy :)
ReplyDeleteYou almost forget just how difficult a language it really is until you have to help someone else learn it. Addison was in another "not talking" mood the other day but instead of signing decided she would write. She came in and plopped this note in front of me that said "Fa" a chicken scratch I could only guess was a "y" followed by a "wn" took about 10 minutes to get her to tell me that "faywn" = "fine"
